The mytho-horror film Maa starring Kajol in the lead role has completed its opening weekend at the box office with a moderate total. While the film had strong pre-release buzz as the second installment in the Shaitaan universe, it witnessed a mixed response from audiences and critics alike, which seems to have reflected in its box office performance.
Maa showed an upward trend over the weekend, but the overall numbers remain underwhelming. In India, the film has collected ₹ 18.43 Crore nett. from 1500+ screens. It has registered an overseas gross of ₹ 3.66 Crore across key international markets during its first weekend which brings to its total worldwide gross to ₹ 25.41 Crore. However, the film has only managed to recover about 50% of its ₹50 Crore budget in its first weekend.
Whether Maa can maintain momentum on weekdays and hold ground in Week 2 will depend heavily on audience reception and competition at the box office. Hit ya Flop rated the movie as 2 out of 5 stars, labeling it “Below Average” and wrote, “ It promises an ambitious blend of mythology & horror, but ultimately delivers a middling experience. It neither offers tension of horror nor visual spectacle of a mythological epic.”
