Two big releases, Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2, entered cinemas with high expectations last week. While one was pitched as a loud, massy entertainer and the other as a socially conscious drama, both have failed to make a mark at the Indian box office, turning out to be commercial disappointments.
Son of Sardaar 2 opened better than Dhadak 2, thanks to its wider single-screen presence and the star power of Ajay Devgn. The film managed a decent ₹24.75 crore in its opening weekend but saw a noticeable drop in collections during weekdays. Ending its first week with ₹31.40 crore, the numbers are far below what was needed for a film made on a massive ₹90 crore budget.
Dhadak 2, despite critical appreciation for its performances and bold tackling of caste discrimination, failed to translate praise into ticket sales. It opened with a modest ₹11.97 crore weekend and added only ₹3.95 crore more over the weekdays, bringing its first-week total to ₹15.92 crore. With a production cost of ₹60 crore, the gap between investment and recovery is glaring.
Both Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2 are underperforming ventures at the domestic box office. The battle at the box office had no winners this time—only lessons for filmmakers and studios about aligning budgets with market realities and audience trends.
