MOVIE REVIEW: Director Tushar Hiranandani’s directorial debut film Saand Ki Aankh is an entertaining and inspiring tale. The movie completely belongs to Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu, they carry the film on their shoulders effortlessly. Both have delivered good performances, they will make you laugh and will leave you with teary eyes too. The film also focuses on the journey of Shefali and Seema Tomar trying to be shooters.
The movie begins with a glimpse of a Johri village household, where a woman’s identity depends on the colour of the dupatta that she drapes to easily get recognized by their husband. The first half is a bit slow and takes time to engage its viewers. A tighter edit would have made it a more gripping watch. When a doctor-turned-shooting instructor Dr Yashpal played by Viineet Kumar Singh sets up a shooting range in the village, Chandro’s granddaughter Shefali played by Sara Arjun decides to give it a shot aganist the will of Rattan Singh played by Prakash Jha. Soon, Prakashi too follows her to the range with her daughter Seema played by Pritha Bakshi.
Accidentally the Shooter Dadi/Revolver Dadi discover that they have a flair for shooting and hits a bullseye. They fool their husbands and orthodox brother-in-law Rattan Singh smartly and head to the competition. They participate in various competitions and win medals and also inspire their granddaughters to follow suit.
Post-interval there are many sweet moments and memorable scenes. One of the most touching scenes, when Chandro and Prakashi mistake the finger bowl for hot lime water and gulp it down the throats. The Maharani played by Nikhat Khan doesn’t want the dadi’s to be humiliated for their gesture and hence, even she does the same. The clash scene between the dadi’s and Rattan Singh is enlivening.
Balwinder Januja’s story is interesting and inspiring but the screenplay is average for most parts which could have been better. Jagdeep Sinhu’s dialogues are good but there are few memorable. When a Journalist asks the Dadi about their age. Bhumi answers: “Aisa na hai, Sahi umaar batana mein ki hai…Par asal mein, auraat uss umaar ka sahi hisaab na laga sake hai jo usne apne liye jiye ho.”
In another scene, Viineet asks, “Ek baat bataa Taai…ki khav tum dono? Nishana bilkul sidha lagawo.” to which, Taapsee answers, “Gaali”.
The supporting cast Viineet Kumar, Prakash Jha, Sara Arjun and Pritha Bakshi have also delivered good performances. Vishal Mishra’s music works well with the plot, Udta Teetar and Baby Gold are good and Womaniya appears in the end, features real Chandro, Prakashi, Seema and Shefali Tomar which is a delight to watch.
