MOVIE REVIEW: Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam is more than just a courtroom drama, it is an emotionally charged and significant cinematic portrayal of a national tragedy and the pursuit of justice. With brilliant writing, engaging screenplay, powerful performances, perfect casting and commendable direction, this is a film that deserves to be watched and discussed. Based on the life and work of Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, the film attempts to bring to the screen not just a legal battle, but also the emotional burden, determination and responsibility that come with fighting for justice after a national tragedy.
What makes Prahaar special is its ability to balance the seriousness of its subject with compelling cinematic storytelling. It is an important film that deserves attention for its subject, its storytelling and the performances that bring its characters to life. The screenplay maintains a compelling rhythm, balancing legal arguments, personal emotions and the larger national context without losing sight of the central conflict. Every important moment contributes to the film’s dramatic progression, while its emotional beats give the story the weight it deserves.
Avinash Arun’s direction gives the film its seriousness and purpose. He keeps the storytelling focused, allowing the screenplay and performances to do the heavy lifting rather than unnecessarily overdramatizing the events. His greatest achievement is bringing together the legal drama and the human story without allowing either to overpower the other. The film also benefits from its strong ensemble, with every actor contributing meaningfully to the overall experience. The performances feel integrated into the storytelling rather than existing merely to create individual showreels.
Rajkummar Rao does it again, he delivers a performance that is award-worthy and capable of winning hearts. He continues to demonstrate why he is among the most dependable performers of his generation, consistently getting under the skin of his characters. Lalit Prabhakar is another major highlight of the film and delivers an impressive performance. Jaideep Ahlawat proves once again that even a limited role can leave a lasting impression when backed by the right performer. Wamiqa Gabbi is excellent. The supporting cast is one of the film’s greatest assets. Ritvik Rathore, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Sikandar Kher delivers a strong performance that complements the film’s intense atmosphere. And then there is Dior Ranju Varghese, the child artist who delivers one of the film’s most memorable moments.
