MOVIE REVIEW: Subedaar is one of those films that keeps you watching but rarely surprises you. The film has a compelling premise, solid performances, and a promising first half. It holds your attention in parts, especially in the early stretch, but ultimately struggles to maintain its narrative grip.
Director Suresh Triveni approaches the material with sincerity, even if the execution remains uneven. To give credit where it’s due, the dusty small-town atmosphere is captured with convincing authenticity. The chapter-wise narration is a neat storytelling device that lends structure to the narrative. The story clearly has potential, and the screenplay initially supports that promise. The conflicts feel engaging, the characters are introduced with purpose, and the narrative steadily raises expectations.
Unfortunately, the film begins to lose its footing in the latter half. The screenplay, which starts off focused, gradually starts to scatter its energy. By the time the film reaches its climax, the storytelling feels hurried and somewhat disjointed. What could have been an emotionally powerful payoff instead feels rushed, leaving the film with a slightly hollow aftertaste. The action sequences add to the film’s entertainment value.
Anil Kapoor once again proves why he remains one of the most enduring actors in Indian cinema. Aging like fine wine, Kapoor delivers a phenomenal performance and commands the screen with effortless authority. Aditya Rawal, who previously impressed audiences with Daldal, raises the bar even further here. He fully inhabits his character and delivers an impressive performance.
Radhikka Madan puts in a sincere effort and performs her role with conviction. Mona Singh delivers a strong and composed performance but is let down by a character arc that lacks sufficient development, especially toward the film’s conclusion. In supporting roles, Saurabh Shukla and Faisal Malik are excellent.
