MOVIE REVIEW: Director Rajkumar Hirani, renowned for his cinematic gems like “Munna Bhai,” “3 Idiots,” and “PK,” returns after a gap of 5 years to the silver screen with “Dunki,” a film that may not reach the towering heights of his previous works but nevertheless manages to captivate and entertain its audience. Hirani, known for his adept storytelling, once again proves his mastery in weaving narratives that resonate with the audience.
The story seamlessly blends humor with a subtle social message. The screenplay, penned by Hirani himself, ensures that the viewers remain engaged from start to finish. The dialogues are crisp, and humour in the film keeps the atmosphere light even when dealing with weighty subjects. However, the script could have benefited if it looked more closely at the characters’ internal struggles and understood their challenges more deeply. The songs are not chartbusters but the music of the film resonates with the emotions portrayed on screen and also contributes to the storytelling.
The initial part of the film showcases Hirani’s signature style, a layered storytelling approach infused with feel-good humor. Also, the movie is packed with tear-jerking scenes that will leave you reaching for tissues. The second half, in particular, proves to be a stumbling block. It falters in comparison to the first half and has a longer-than-needed runtime. It may have stumbled along the way, but its ending manages to redeem some of the emotional weight that the film initially promised. It succeeds in leaving a powerful and thought-provoking impression as the credits roll.
The ensemble cast delivers stellar performances. With the success of two blockbusters earlier this year, ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan,’ expectations are soaring high for Dunki. Shah Rukh Khan has given an outstanding performance once again. His monologue inside the court emerges as a brilliant moment in the film. Taapsee Pannu delivers an excellent performance. Her standout performance becomes a pleasant surprise for the audience. Vicky Kaushal shines in his special appearance, despite the limited screen time, his character leaves a lasting impact. Rajkumar Hirani ensures that the supporting cast is not overshadowed. The contributions of Boman Irani, Anil Grover, Vikram Kochhar, and Deven Bhojani were noteworthy, and the entire supporting cast delivered fine performances.
